Great Case with a Couple Flaws

*by N***S on Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2014*

Pros:-Looks amazing-Cable management turned out great with a bit of work (I'll go more into that below if you're interested.)-All the drive space I need-The tool-less PCI slot system is flawless. I had some reservations about trusting my HD 7970 to this thing, but once I saw and used the system in person, all doubts left immediately. It's pure genius and all cases need to begin using it immediately.-Thumb screws are huge. I hate tiny thumb screws because they always hurt when they're on too tight or you're trying to screw them in tightly, but the diameter on these is great.-Black motherboard standoffs. This isn't much, but when I saw that the standoffs are black, I said to myself, "Wow, somebody really cared about this. Nice touch, guys."-Comes with a nice thing for installing motherboard standoffs. I much prefer the one that comes with Fractal Design's Define R4 though. That one doubles as a thumb screw adapter. The one that comes with this case must be used with a screwdriver, a tricky endeavor in this case.Cons:-Noise. Seeing as how this is called the "Dead Silence," I was expecting quiet. It doesn't sound like a jet engine, but it's far from silent. The 3.5" drive bays have no anti-vibration mechanism. Only the 2.5" drive bays do, and they don't need it since most people will be installing SSDs there. This makes no sense to me and I have no idea why AeroCool did this.-Video card space. I have an HD 7970, which is 10.5" or 265mm long. I knew I was going to have to take the external 3.5" drive cage off in order for the card to fit, but I was not prepared to have to try to remove the 5.25" bay in order to plug in the PCI-e power cables. I was thankfully able to fit it back on once the power was connected though. I wouldn't usually count this as a con, but...-The 5.25" drive bay is stuck on. One of the screws that holds the drive cage in place turns in its hole, but doesn't come out or go in at all. Somehow it still holds the cage in place though. It's almost like a rivet with a phillips head. I was able to move the cage enough out of the way to get the PCI-e power in, but that was it. If I had needed the cage out for water cooling or something, I would have probably had to break something in order to get it out.-The CPU cutout is completely useless. I have a Xigmatek Dark Knight II, and the backplate is maybe 3 or 4mm thick, but I haven't measured it. In order to screw the motherboard down, I had to bend it pretty significantly because the cutout is in completely the wrong place, and even if it was in the right place, it wouldn't be big enough. I don't have to worry about shorts or anything because the backplate is plastic, but if it were metal, I would be very concerned.Verdict:Despite the cons, I really like this case a lot. I needed something smaller than my Define R4, but I still wanted the style. I got it in this case, plus the red bits, which I love. I would wholeheartedly recommend this case one one condition: that you don't mind HDD noises. Because they really are quite loud. An extra 5mm added to the drive cage width to add some rubber standoffs wouldn't have been that much to ask for in a case called the "Dead Silence."And now a word about cable management, since I'm really into it. Stop reading if you don't care about it. The cable management is decent in this case. Not excellent though. The front panel connectors especially presented a problem. As other reviewers have mentioned, they are far to long to be routed straight to the motherboard pins. I knew this, and thought I'd try routing them over the 5.25" bay, down the side, then between the motherboard and motherboard tray, then into the pins. But it was too short for this. The front panel connectors need to be either a little bit longer or a lot shorter.Other than that, I really have no complaints about the cable management. The case is by its nature very conducive to cable management. All of the power cables are within a few inches of where they need to go, and since the PSU is directly under the motherboard tray, it's as if you had the PSU behind the motherboard tray in a standard case, which is brilliant. The area between my internal drive cages is stuffed full of cables, but that's great since it's out of sight. The front panel USB 2.0 and 3.0 cables were perfect. The front panel audio cable was too short for what I wanted to do, but that's a problem with my motherboard layout, not with the case. CPU power comes straight up between the motherboard tray and the right panel, so it's perfect. You might run into some weird issues with 5.25" drives with massive CPU coolers because the cables will be right there next to the push fan, but you should be fine. I was. My cooler height is 159mm and everything fit completely comfortably.

    Cool, Quiet, and Understated

*by G***T on Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2014*

I bought this case in January of this year as a replacement for my now antiquated NZXT Hades. Although it was still a serviceable case, the previous owner had wired the power supply cables into the case in such a way that it would be impossible for me to ever upgrade the power supply. As a college student, I was looking for a way to "shrink" my desktop to a more manageable size for transport purposes. I also considered the Corsair Carbide Air 540, the EVGA Hadron Air, and the BitFenix Prodigy.|~~ Initial Impressions ~~|When I first took the case out of the box, I was impressed with the build quality. I have never been a fan of any sort of outer plastic on computer cases, due to previous incidents during travel with my previous computer case. The plastic pins that hold in the front are extremely strong, and actually required me to get a pliers to remove the front panel. Also, the case fans are very strong, and, despite the low RPM's, they still haul a surprising amount of air. Lastly, my favorite build-related feature to this case, is the interchangeable "lids" on the top. You can either go with one that contains mesh if you are going to use this case for heavy gaming and have a large and hot graphics card, like my GTX 480. Also included is a solid plate that can be installed for quiet operation. Both of these lids are extremely well made, and I have no qualms switching them out depending on the situation.|~~ Features, Features, Features! ~~|This case has many features that are surprisingly well hidden. For example, the way that airflow works in the case to keep out dust. Around the case are vent holes, in which are "connected", for lack of better term, to the intake fan ports, that allow for airflow without a front mesh. Also, the top mesh plate, and the bottom PSU fan dust cover contribute to keeping dust out of the case. Over time, however, dust will build up on the soft-touch surface of the case, and it will require cleaning, but the inside components, at least so far (3 months of use), have remained almost immaculate.Along with the anti-dust measures, the case features tool less 3.5-inch drive bays, tool less PCI card bays, and a well thought out cable management system. Although the case only has room for a PSU up to 180mm or so, it fits my brand new Corsair CX750M without any trouble. Also, the case has support for both Mini ITX motherboards, and mATX motherboards in a size comprable to the BitFenix Prodigy, so there is a little more leeway in purchasing components for your computer. Along with that, there is support for up to four case fans, which I would suggest, because the more fans, the better. The arrangement is 200mm in the front, 120 or 140mm in the back, and either two 120mm, or one 140 and one 120mm on the top. You could also potentially fit a slimmer 240mm rad on the top for some water cooling.Lastly, a feature I think most would overlook is its understatedness. Many people like flashy things, and I get that, however, it's fairly nice to have a desktop that people don't point to all the time, and can be hidden in plain sight. Also, there is a lesser chance a burglar would steal the desktop because it looks like a spiffier workstation.|~~ Qualms ~~|I don't really have many qualms with the case. I think the only major thing I don't like is the small PSU bay, but this is necessary to accommodate both the 3.5, and the 2.5in drive bays.|~~ Pros and Cons ~~|Pros:- Quiet- Keeps things relatively dust free (inside, at least)- Many unexpected features- Build Quality- Flat motherboard tray- Can accommodate up to two 3.5 in and two 2.5 in hard drives- Cable management- Size- USB 3 on front headers- Side panels slide off with very little effort- Room for Graphics cards up to 320mmCons:- Can get very dusty outside- Should come with more case fans- USB ports are on top instead of in front- Only room for PSU's up to 180mm (I'd say more like 150-160 if you want room for cables)- 3.5in Floppy Drive bay that really isn't necessary- Not that great for water coolingTL;DR --> This is a case that should be considered for anyone looking for something Cool, Quiet, Small, and has great durability. There are some minor issues that I have with it, however, it is still a very well-made case.Final Score: 9.5/10 (4.75 Stars). Knocked off .5 because only two case fans come with the case, and the small amount of PSU space.

Five Years Later: Would I still buy this case?

*by M***P on Reviewed in Canada on September 21, 2021*

This case has been discontinued for a couple of years now (I bought it from Amazon in2016), and I am still using it after five years. Not that anyone is going to buy it new nowadays, but this is what I learned in the past 5 years with this case:- It is not "Dead Silent". Not a problem since I always thought DS was a marketing gimmick- It looks VERY cool in person. Sorry for the reviewer dude that didn't like it- The soft-touch plastic is EXACTLY the same as on my Alienware laptop. Nice.- The thumb screws are HUGE which is the RIGHT size.- Screwless PCI cage is a little finicky- Horizontal motherboard! I didn't expect that! But, it works (mATCX and ITX only)- It is FAT! The online pics don't do it justice, but this case is more of a cube than a rectangle. Be warned. I didn't know and now it doesn't fit in my custom desk cutout, so I have to keep it outside the desk- It is Expensive! I paid $143 CAD plus 13% HST in 2016. Later I learned there are full ATX cases from better manufacturers for $80-$90 CAD- Both 2.5'' and 3/5'' inch HDD enclosures hold 2 drives each. With 2.5'' maxing at 5TB and 3.5'' maxing out at 20Tb, that's 30TB space for you. If that's too little for you - get a server. 3 M2 SSD spots- Cable management can be a mess for a case this small if you put in too many components- Only get FULLY modular PSUs for this case. You will thank me later.- Now the worst part: if you fill it up with stuff (like I did) - the airflow is going to suck big time. I solved this by removing one of the side panels- OVERALL: not a bad case, but not as good as it sounded in the marketing materials. If you have it - keep it, but if I was buying a new case again, I would buy another brand/model.
