I have had other types of feeders out with these and the hummers will ignore them.It’s the base with its perch and nectar feeding holes. The birds can easily feed from anywhere on the perch. They stay perched one these feeders and feed, chat with the other birds on the feeder or just rest between sips ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Yes it is solid red glass not a paint job, but design is flawed. *by R***Y on Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2018* Ok, so I'm having trouble with this model but I think I fixed it. I will update later.The real Problem is that the base does not fill up very well with nectar. Its hard for the birds to reach and they stopped using it after trying once.The threaded neck screws down too far so only a little nectar comes out into the reservoir. SERIOUS design flaw! If you just unscrew it a little it fills better, but then the bottom is loose and not secure. So to fix it I used a rubber washer meant for a garden hose and put it on the neck of the bottle. It seems to space it out better and still be secure. I will see how well it goes. So far no birds use the feeder.This feeder is VERY attractive. I love its appearance. The glass is solid red. Molded glass bottle with a threaded neck. The bottom reservoir is plastic, the cover plate is an unknown stamped metal that has been copper plated. It is NOT solid copper. This is a problem as it will pit over time I am sure. I will update if this is not the case. I live in Portland OR where we feed hummers year round and it is wet always. My feeders are all under cover so they do not get rained upon, but it's still wet all the time. I give this as a reference since my issues may not be relevant to a buyer in say Arizona.When the feeder arrived it was GREASY, like some kind of factory production necessary lubricant was on it. I bought a second and it also was greasy. So I cleaned it thoroughly, with decreasing dish soap and rinsed it in vinegar and then in water. One feeder had a lot of bubbles in the glass. I consider this a manufacturing flaw and a quality issue, but it does not affect the function, but for 47 bucks...really? ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Schrodt *by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2013* We have several Schrodt feeders. This one is our favorite, and probably because of the bright red, faceted glass, the hummers' favorite too. This one is the largest of the Schrodt feeders, holding probably twice the sugar water of their smaller models, if you fill it up. We do not, as we refill often, and use only a cup at a time, otherwise we would be pouring out a lot of the left-over nectar. I have never seen a Schrodt feeder leak in high winds, I think because the top of the base presses down firmly against the bottom as you screw in the glass top. Disassembly for cleaning and filling is easy, and so is reassembly. The top half of the base is copper, not some coated metal that will rust over time. The copper has four flower-shaped designs cut into it for feeding so you don't have to worry about raised, attached "flowers" breaking or falling off. In our experience it takes a bit for the birds to learn to drink from this design, but they do, and because the slots can't clog like some of the narrow-throated "flowers", they don't require any effort to clean when refilling. The birds also like the ability to perch on the edge of the feeder while drinking, or just resting while guarding their food source. The bottom is plastic, but is solid and seems to be ozone resistant. We have had one Schrodt for several years and the plastic looks like new and a quick polish with steel wool on the copper brings that back to new if you don't like the aged patina that copper takes on when exposed to the weather. A bottle brush, available on Amazon, along with a little soapy water, and a paper towel or two is all you will need to clean these feeders. While Schrodt feeders are all pricey, at two to three times the cost of cheaper hummingbird feeders, at least with these models you get what you pay for...a great looking feeder that is functional, not too wasteful of nectar, easy to clean and refill, and lasts for years without a lot of annual maintenance.
