The gears require a separate D cell battery, while the clockworks uses a AA battery. **Q: does this clock make any noise?** A: No, the clock is silent. Really a nice clock, but if it doesn’t sit even on your wall some of the gears may not move. Simply put a small wedge behind clock to even out. Picture doesn’t do this clock justice. If you put the D battery in for the gears you can hear them. They are not loud but sitting at my desk 5-6 feet away when it’s quiet I can hear them. You have to look directly at the clock to see the time. From the side you cannot see it do to the frame of the clock.
