Is it worth upgrading if you already have a 8k stone** A: It all depends on what you want in your sharpening toolbox! I have a 250, 300, 500, 800, 1K, 2K, 3K, 4K, 6K, 8K, 12K and 16K Stones... My 500 grit, 1k and 3k are showing noticeable wear on the stones... 8k and 12k are used for polishing my knives or chizels! But, I think the 12K natural stones a winner an extremely hard stones! With these stones you have to build up a slurry before honing! Good Luck... It is implied that this is a natural stone and not man made. As far as the exact type/material of stone, I have not been able to find any conclusive information on this nor any information on the mine itself. Out of all my stones, this one is probably my favorite. It is dence, yet forgiving. I use it as a polishing stone after using my ceramic shapton stones to sharpen my edge. I would say mine is more like an 8,000 grit, but that's not to say the stone you get couldn't be closer to 12,000.
