Most noise cancelling headphones require the function to be on. If U do not want Noise cancellation, I would go with a cheaper pair. The Bose uses one Battery, which gives you about 35 straight hours of playing time. The beats uses 2 batteries, and I think gives you about 30 hours. **Q: Will these headphones cancel out the noise of people talking on the phone and to each other in the office?** A: No. I use them at the office because of the number of computers running near me, with noisy fans etc. I can hear other people perfectly well when they talk. The headphones analyse the noise around them then generate anti-noise to cancel it out, but it's not perfect ( which is deliberate ), there's a delay in the analysis. Therefore something constant like a fan whirrin will be cancelled out almost perfectly, but a continually changing source like a human voice speaking will sound slightly different to normal, but be perfectly intelligible / clear because the headphones are only cancelling out what they heard a fraction of a second before that, so it never catches up. If they change their conversation from speech to a consistant hum then that'd be cancelled. Hope I'm making myself clear. **Q: Does it make your ears sore if you wear them for a few hours?** A: I have worn them on a 6 hour flight before. These actually to over the ears, they don't rest on them. I find them light and comfortable. And they've never failed as of this post. **Q: How much sound can these headphones cancel out?** A: Hi Tony. My first pair were pretty good. Most constant background noise was filtered out (traffic noise, engine noise in aircraft etc.). I could still hear people speaking although at a lower volume. When friends tried them, they were all quite impressed by the noise cancelling.My second pair weren't as good as the first pair. That said, if you open the ear pieces (they are held together with small screws) you will see a small potentiometer (one in each ear piece) with an adjusting slot.I fiddled with this and noticed it increased/decreased the noise cancelling.
