Information from the microphone is fed to the audio enhancer pack where it is analyzed and a precise active noise cancellation wave is generated. While Noisebuster didn't entirely eliminate the jackhammer's rat-a-tat-tat, it did significantly reduce the sound so that we could listen to quiet music, such as soft jazz and classical. As for the sound of the headphones themselves, the midrange is clear, but the HP-NC1s are a little sluggish overall, with no deep bass or extended high frequencies. In fairness to the HP-NC1s, noise-canceling headsets often sound restricted in the frequency extremes, as it can be tricky for the noise-canceling devices to differentiate between noise and music. The fit of these headphones is also a little snug for our taste, but you can loosen them a bit by gently bending the headset. We have heard comparably priced, non-noise-canceling headphones that sound better than Maxell's HP-NC1. However, better sound doesn't matter much if you're having a hard time hearing the music in a noisy environment. Most of them use digital electronic trickery that subtracts away some of the noise around the listener. These Maxell HP/NC headphones are different - they use a tiny microphone that "listens" to the sound the headphones make, and ensure that this sound exactly matches the electrical signal from your mp3 player or other audio source.This has the effect of removing some of the ambient noise, since that noise is not present in the electrical signal going into the headphones. But even better, it also reduces the distortion and flattens the frequency response of the headphones where it counts most - at your ear. As a result, this HP/NC family of headphones has a far more accurate bass response than any other lightweight on-the-ear (supra-aural) headphone. Normally, only over-the-ear (circumaural) headphones produce this sort of deep and accurate bass.So, these headphones quieten the background noise a little bit, and as a bonus, give you much more accurate deep bass than other on-the-ear headphones of similar size and weight. For me, the second feature is what I like most about them.For those with an electronics background: what the HP/NC design does is apply negative feedback around the entire headphone, including the acoustic sound pressure level at your ear, by sensing this with a tiny microphone built into each earpiece. I looked for at least an hour at all different brands and read hundreds of reviews. Bose, Skull Candy, Beats by Dre. After all the searching, I came to the conclusion that these are as good as any for the price. The bass is not loud but it is enough to gauge if it will be loud out of a speaker. They do actually fit perfectly around my ear without touching any part of my ear. I can wear them for hours. They get hot after a little but what headphones don't. Its funny when I see people complain about that. You have no air getting to your ears, of course they will get hot. Anyway, love these headphones.I make dub step music mixes and they get played through large powered speakers in a pretty large building. I use these headphones to get an idea of how it will sound in this venue with regards to volume and bass. These do the job for me!!I guess the headphones my dad had were made with better quality assurance than the ones I bought. The left headphone stopped producing sound completely and could not get it working again. I treat my things with great care and never handled these headphones any way but gently. There's nothing redeeming about them. They say "noise cancelling" but it doesn't even quiet the noise from my computer's fan. There's no discernible difference between when the switch is on or off. In fact there's a scratchy noise when it's on. The plastic has a cheap feel to it and the packaging is that impossible to open unnecessarily plastic non-recyclable stuff. The 3.5mm plug doesn't even get past my iPhone's bumper. I had a nice pair of Panasonic headphones before they got left on a bus and I should have gone back to them.
