I do not drive much in winter and the battery gets low. Does it die entirely but does not have enough charge to start my car. I use this charger for a max of 1hr, usually ~10-20 minutes. It charges enough to start my car. I would NOT attempt starting with it connected. I just connect, let it trickle charge, remove, and then start the car. I have not used it for longer than 1hr and in that time it did not get hot at all. Barely even warm to the touch. The connectors are pretty flimsy, thin metal. There is no on/off switch. As soon as it is connected to a battery or the wall its powered up. I connect to battery first, then wall. I unplug from wall before removing from battery. Or clip onto plastic and do one terminal at a time. The unit is pretty dangerous given the lack of on/off. As long as you pay attention, it should not be a problem.
