I suspected that “heart” would become, once again, a very important “meme” for the future evolvement in consciousness, as in “A change of heart.” I predicted, correctly, that moving from head to heart, as it were, would replace shifting from left-brain to right-brain as the popular pre-emptive prescription for peace, perceptivity, and prosperity. But what about the roots of this perspective? On the day I passed my PhD oral exam, at UCLA, in June of 1970, I was browsing about in the student bookstore, and came upon a manuscript by Carlos Casteneda, who was a graduate student in anthropology. The idea in there that got my attention was that what we can perceive may be a function of our mental set or state of consciousness. I had no idea at the time that I was looking at what would become an international sensation. Nevertheless, in that manuscript, Casteneda quotes Don Juan as distilling his teaching down to “follow a path with heart.” The phrase would later get picked up and used a lot. I wondered if there was some precedent for Don Juan’s use of the word heart that way. After all, some Mexican spiritual systems were reported to use hearts in a different manner, harvesting them to feed the sun! I wonder what spiritual practices we perform today that one day will be seen as a too literalistic an enactment of a spiritual truth? Finally, my curiosity has been satisfied! SPIRITUAL TELEPATHY presents the important history of the spiritual knowledge of the heart’s function and purpose. The author, Colleen Mauro, was the creator and editor of the magazine Intuition. She's a great writer, easy to read, and knows a lot about the field of creative consciousness. In this book she brings together something that Edgar Cayce also integrated: spirituality with psychic functioning. I know of no other book like it and I highly recommend it. If you are interested in a compendium of some of our received wisdom (even though primarily from the Theosophic tradition) concerning this important topic, you’ll find a wealth of guidance, practical advice and develop exercises. It also contains the scripts for many meditations on aspects of spiritual telepathy and openheartedness. Regarding the heart, I was pleased to learn so much in this book about the Buddhist heart. Jack Kornfield had made such great use of it in his book, A path with heart, which I used as a text book at Atlantic University for several years. Colleen writes that the Buddhists considered the heart to have 10 attributes or perfections: generosity, integrity, simplicity, wisdom, strength, patience, truthfulness, determination, lovingkindness and equanimity. The Theosophic tradition also places great importance on the heart. It envisions the heart as a 12 petal lotus flower. As each of the 12 virtues (selflessness, humility, service, labor, patience, tolerance, spiritual identification, compassion, sympathy, wisdom, sacrifice, and gratitude) are developed, the flower opens its petals. Interesting, isn’t it, that my drawing of the heart awakening appears to be like a flower blossom. The second half of Colleen’s book lays out in some detail various paths and dimensions for personal development. One of the main methods is to use affirmative meditations. They are a cross between a scripted prayer and (somewhat) improvisational visualizations on a theme. They run the gamut from the most general—the Great Invocation—to specific goals for improvement or healing. Colleen acknowledges Jack Kornfield as a popular source for such meditations and presents several of them, plus those from the Lucas Trust. Colleen concludes her valuable book with a chapter on becoming a “World Server.” She describes a number of activities (philanthropy, The Practical Visionary), networks (Triangle Network), organizations (Lifebridge Foundation) and groups(Full-Moon Meditation Group) where soul growth and service come together. Having sufficiently described and praised the book as well worth your time, let me now use it as a teaching device. Let’s focus in on the concept and value of “spiritual telepathy” and how to experience it in a way that is worth your while also. What I find very interesting is that the model practitioners that Colleen portrays, Jesus, Buddha, etal, were service oriented. She ends on the note of service as the key to soul growth, quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s not-enough quoted lines, “I slept and dreamt that life was joy I awoke and saw that life was service I acted and belold, service was joy.” On the other hand, most all of the advice on developing oneself (she’s got great stuff folks are going to love on diet and exercise!) have to do with activities that are in the context of solitary effort. It’s not exactly like she’s implying, “Go meditate as a vegetarian celibate in a cave until you become enlightened and then go out and serve others.” I believe it’s an oversight, in the same way that the sunlight obscures the stars. That is to say, perhaps this omission is more of a simple perspective, one that expresses the context in which her main sources, Theosophists and others of the Ageless Wisdom tradition, which envisioned the individual yogi working on self-mastery. Colleen opens her book by calling it about “ancient mind training techniques.” Perhaps that is the problem, that in ancient times, there were no interpersonal techniques for soul development, just individual ones. In contemporary times, however, the global, social consequences of the undeveloped, individual mind, are quite obvious and overwhelming. Carl Jung began his psychoanalytic method as a one-on-one activity, because he believed the individual was key. Over the years, however, the Jungian community began to see the value of group work. The value and impact of analytical psychology to society at large greatly improved as a result. The famous anthropologist Margaret Mead stated famously, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Edgar Cayce proposed that the small group was the ideal context for experimenting with spiritual and psychic development. He and his students created the A Search for God study group format for just such a purpose. It wouldn’t be hard to find some folks who can present evidence of its effectiveness. Full disclosure would require of me to mention my own creation, The Intuitive Heart Discovery Group. It trains in the ability to use intuition for constructive purposes by first learning how to operate as a social unit that recognizes experientially its intuitive oneness. Spiritual Telepathy involves more than one person’s solitary experience. It occurs in a context of relationship. Here Colleen describes it: “Spiritual, or soul-to-soul telepathy is the highest type of telepathy. This type of telepathy utilizes the higher levels of the mental plane. Spiritual telepathy becomes possible only when we’ve created a link between the brain, mind, and soul.” Although Colleen describes it as “soul¬to-soul,” all of her examples (and she gives a great overview of composer’s lives, as described in that great book, …) are more like individual person’s being highly receptive to inspiration. She does mention dream telepathy, yet in the context of quantitative laboratory study. Linda Magallon’s classic work, Mutual Dreaming, is not mentioned. That’s a shame because the spirituality among the participants is something that grows through their spiritual telepathy experiences in dreams.
