I'm preparing for a trip to Bangladesh very soon and what I wanted was a bird's eye view of the country and its history that doesn't get bogged down in too many details, and this is it. It moves from the overall context of the delta, including geography and geology and the linguistic and early movement of peoples, and then goes through the history. It never gets stuck in a topic and is broken up into short chapters that move along quickly without being rushed. It's very well referenced, so I while reading I had a lot of confidence in the information presented (I'm a history teacher, so this matters to me). In addition to history it also covers culture, enough to give you a flavour but not too much to feel like conjecture, and has a good range of pictures. Also it is much better written than I expected. I say this not because I had any indication that it was going to be poorly written, just that its very hard to write history well. I have read a ton of history books on single countries, and I can't think of many others that are as readable as this. I like reading history, but so many history books feel like hard work, at least in places. This one didn't. In short: This is a perfect history book, written at the right level of resolution, and the reader comes away with a very clear sense of the overall context and 'story' of Bangladesh. I sincerely wish there were more books like this, texts that give you a general picture of a single country. Highly recommended.
