Review: Second purchase of a great percolator. - My first Cuisinart PRC-12 was a gift, and I loved it because it brewed better coffee than the drip coffee makers that I had been using previously. It also lasted for a long time before the heating element began to fail. It lasted for at least four years, and probably longer before I noticed it couldn't make coffee any longer. I used the percolator every day. After some thought, I decided to buy the same percolator again, and it is still great. I use paper filters inside the brew basket by punching a hole in a 12 cup coffee filter with a bamboo skewer, and that keeps grounds out of my coffee. Also, when the plastic ball in the lid broke, I found a website where I bought 2 more of them to replace just the bulb and not the whole lid, so spare bulbs are available. The original plastic bulb lasted nearly the whole lifetime of the percolator, so at least four years and maybe five. Bottom line, this percolator is worth a try. I like strong, hot coffee and this percolator makes it great. I tried a camping style stove top percolator in the interim, and it worked, but the inside parts were made of flimsy aluminum, and it was possible to boil the coffee too much and ruin it, if I got busy doing something else. Mine just broke for the second time- Cuisinart did replace the knob, which does come off if you are handy with a pair of pliers but the amount of stress the plastic is under after a number of heat cycles fractures. Both handles fractured in the same way. Design fault- this is what you get when the accountants get in after the engineers... **Q: Is the knob on the top glass or plastic?** A: Don't buy this coffee pot. Be prepared for the cheap plastic knob on top to break. We used ours pot daily for the past 3 years. Once a year we have to replace the plastic knob. OK, there only $6.50. buy two right! Well the last one to break I call the company for a couple replacements. They don't just sell the knobs anymore you have to purchase the whole lid for $17.00. I told them to forget it. Buy a pot that has a glass knob! Spend the extra money. **Q: Does the pot keep the coffee warm by re-percolating periodically, or does it just have a heating element?** A: No, it does not re-percolate after the first cycle. If you leave it plugged in after finishing, it is essentially just a hot plate that keeps the coffee warm. It will not percolate already hot coffee. If you want it to percolate the same coffee more, it has to be cooled all the way back down somehow. This basically defeats the ENTIRE PURPOSE of a percolator in the first place. It essentially is a drip coffee maker with a water heater, and takes away any control you have over how long it percolates or how strong it can make coffee. That is why there is a clear knob on top, so we know to KEEP it percolating. With this one, we can't. So what's the clear knob even for?
