It's an old-fashioned type of lamp and needs a glass chimney to hold up the metal shade. I first ordered a 12-in chimney and it was just too tall and didn't hold the shade up tall enough. The 10-in chimney has just the right amount of girth to hold up my metal shade perfectly and not stick out too tall above the shade.
