The Earth is not a perfect sphere. Due to it's rotation, the Earth (like all rotating planets) has a slightly distorted shape. The rotational momentum tends to force the matter to bunch up in the middle. In the case of the Earth, this "middle" is the equator. Earth’s Rotation Causes …. Bulging at Equator And Flattening at the Poles HOW IT WORKS Attach the 9v battery with the battery snap and observe what happens….. Observation: In idle condition the spring bands are circular in shape. On connecting the battery with the Snap, Motor rotates and Spins the Vertical Rod. Bands fixed to the vertical rod also spin. The top of the band can slide along the vertical rod. Spinning the ring-shaped band makes it bulge out. Hence the spring bands bulges at its equator and flattens at its poles in analogy with the Earth. HOW IT WORKS CENTRIPETAL FORCE: There are only two forces acting on the object, the Earth's gravity, which acts in a downward direction, and the equal and opposite tension in the spring, acting upward
