    FAN FUNDED RETURN

Baltimore-based Dog Fashion Disco have always been difficult to pin down. Combining such potentially dissimilar genres as alternative metal, funk and cabaret, the collective made a name for themselves with their unique crossover style. The act's eclectic tendencies backed by sharp songwriting turned such albums as Anarchists Of Good Taste and Committed To a Bright Future into exciting genre-bending offerings. The band was clearly on a roll last decade but they didn't hit their stride until 2006 when Adultery was released. Their trademark eclecticism blended so well with film noir concepts that the result was one of the most adventurous records of the last decade, a collection of stylistically varied songs dexterously bound by the theme of crime. The new album from reunited Dog Fashion Disco comes out after eight years on the grounds of a successful crowdfunding campaign, and it's totally in line with the expectations of fans perfectly epitomizing what the group are all about. Instead of venturing into new musical realms, Sweet Nothings settles on the act's familiar fusion of styles. Sturdy metal-centered arrangements are augmented by jazzy woodwind instruments and spooky keys taken straight from a horror movie. The allure of the record lies in how effectively these divergent influences are combined. The sextet are equally captivating when they deal in robust metallic head-bangers and playful funky cuts. There's a fine balance of both these track modes here. The off-kilter progressions of such pummeling songs as 'Scarlet Fever' and 'Envy The Vultures' are contrasted with the danceable grooves of 'Doctor's Orders,' the Caribbean rhythms of 'Struck By Lightening' and the idyllic atmospherics of the title track.

It stands as tall as the rest!

As anyone who has followed Todd Smith throughout his projects knows, Mr. Smith is really one of the most versatile artists around. I've been a huge fan ever since Anarchists and I've always found his music addictive and thought provoking. The latest effort from Dog Fashion Disco has proven to have more layers than I originally thought and it is every bit as good and anything they've previously release. It's been too long since we've had an new DFD album and I'm thrilled to add this to the collection. The album was crowd funded and they hit all of their objectives which means that this is the first half of a double album.I'm not one who goes into a huge break down of each song individually. I will say this, no two are the same and if you're looking for a little bit of metal, experimental, funk, jazz, and anything else you can think of, stop reading now and buy it! The depth of the lyrics are always my favorite part. From deep to bleak, Todd knows how to write. Even the album cover can have several different meanings depending on where you are in the album.I'm no professional when it comes to writing reviews so, I'll just say this.....Outstanding album, great song writing, perfect vocals, and very, very original. If you don't currently own any DFD albums, buy this one! If you do own DFD albums but haven't bought this one, shame on you....buy this one!

Not the best Dog Fashion Disco CD, but it is a new one...and does have some great tracks

Some great tracks, and some pretty forgettable ones. Not the best Dog Fashion Disco CD....but at least it is a new DFD CD. I find myself now skipping a few songs, and moving to more of the interesting ones. This album does not compare to Adultery, but that might be too much to even expect. My personal favorite tracks: Doctor's Orders, Sweet Nothings, End of the Road. But every once in a while I need the styles of Struck by Lightening or Tastes So Sweet. Tracks 6-8 are the onces I often skip. They are the heavier ones, which honestly is what I thought I would like more, but they were just not as unique and gripping as the other ones. For a band that jumps around in vocal and musical styles so much these seemed mundane (by DFD standards).
