**Q: Will this hold open work off 12 volts as well as 24 volts?**
A: NO, THIS ITEM IS RATED FOR 120 VOLTS OR 24 VOLTS.  MOST 24 VOLT TRANSFORMERS RUN A BIT HIGHER THAN 24V, SAY 27-30.  BUT A LOWER VOLTAGE UNLIKELY.  IN USING THIS DOOR MAGNET I SOMETIMES HAVE TROUBLE HAVING ENOUGH POWER/MAGNETIC STRENGTH,  TO KEEP THE DOOR OPEN.  AND THAT IS USING 24 VOLTS.

**Q: will this work from the sound of a smoke alarm or does it have to be hard wired?**
A: have to hard wire

**Q: What type of low voltage cable is needed....18 gauge with 2 conductors?**
A: 18 gauge is fine with transformer

**Q: Will this work with interconnected smoke detectors?**
A: Household interconnected smoke alarms send a 9 volt signal on the red wire.  You have to pull power from the magnets to get them to release.  You could control them with some normally closed relays.
