Compartment is 32" deep and the board covering it is 38" and hinged. The board with the mattress and bedding weighed 30lbs at the lift point on the frt. edge. I used this kit and it makes lifting the bed much easier and holds it up with no problem. Took some trial and error as it's all a guess and you have to be sure the cylinders compress but don't bottom out. I put the end of the cylinder at 8 1/2" from the back of the board and 18" from the back on the base. Because of the brackets this kit comes with and the way the studs attach I had to drop the base end about 4". If I had to do it again I would not buy this kit because of the brackets and the stud ends. Would be better if the studs were on the brackets and the ends of the supports were sockets.
