The padding is fairly thick and not mushy at all. Because of the design and the way the pads are layered, there are no gaps or thin spots in the coverage but the whole thing is still able to flex and move with your body. Elastic cords on both sides allow the vest to be tightened or loosened as needed up to about 2 inches per side. There is padding under the cords so even if they are loosened the area is still protected. I did not think I was going to be able to afford a vest this comfortable and protective but I got lucky and caught it for $250. Now that I have it, I can say it is definitely worth the full retail amount.
