Our siphons use the "Affnan" 2-1 funnel top design that assures an amazingly fast start and no we do not ever use a "trap" at the bottom because traps clog up down the road and cause failures. We also do not use the small "snorkel tube" you may see on other bells as that too gets clogged or breaks seal and we find it totally unnecessary (and very noisy) with our design which allows air to come under the bell and back up the down tube when it comes time to "break siphon". Simple and always trouble free with guaranteed reliable starts and stops. Also, we use a 4" gravel/media guard TO SAVE YOU GROW SPACE and they are easy to rotate in place to cut off any roots that are always trying to grow through any gravel guard. We rotate ours about once a month and that is pretty much ALL the maintenance these siphons ever need. Those 6" guards are unnecessary, expensive to ship and take up way too much of your valuable grow space. Our guards are made of S&D 200lbs per square inch pipe that boasts a larger inner diameter than schedule 40 for bigger hands like mine. A rain barrel is usually 50 to 75 gallons . My bell siphons start in a tank of more than 100 gallons. My larger are 250 plus gallons. The siphons are sometime difficult to start. A larger tamk would be better for the bell siphon **Q: What size pump/gph would you recommend using for the siphon to work good on a ibc tote?** A: I use an 800 to 1000 gal. per hour pump. **Q: What is adjustable on this siphon? is the 12" relating to the entire depth of the cut off top part of the ibc tote?** A: The 2 rings you see in the photo will raise the water depth by 1/2" and 1" for starting seeds, planting seedlings and combined it will flood above the media to drive out bugs as stated in the description. As to your second question as stated in the description I cut the siphons based upon MEDIA depth so if you are filling your IBC right up to the brim with media then yes but most people leave an inch or so of IBC above the media. I personally leave about 2" so I can flood the grow bed without any spills. Media of course refers to the gravel, river rock, clay balls, etc. I don't care how deep your IBC is but rather how deep your MEDIA is. The siphon is designed to keep the system water below the media surface so you won't grow algae. I am being pressured to write a book on Aquaponics 101 I can tell. However, I had to run ... *by R***K on May 1, 2016* Works as expected. However, I had to run to Lowes to get an extension so I could fir this in the base of the growbed which is 2 inches thick. Once installed, I had to cut the center pipe a couple of inches to set the water level to go over the gravel, which was set to around 10 inches. The growbed I built is 8X2X1. I used 4X4 for the 4 corners, and a lot of 2X6X8s to build it so it can hold up to a ton of gravel, and lot of water. The pump works every time without fail and almost empties out the bed. However, I had to reduce the speed of incoming water from the pond else, it keeps pumping water into the bed putting it into a never ending waterfall type pump cycle which I do not want.
