Should I get the small size instead?** A: the way the cup is designed that it doesnt have much of a lip on it an is a vertical surface, as well as the size of it and having had cockateil's before i don't think that she will be able to get inside it and sit on the dish. My parakeets i doubt could sit in this very easily, so i'm pretty sure it will work well for your cockatiel in size and function. Of course there's always that rare bird that is a gymnast that might prove me wrong LOL but over all i think you are safe with this product **Q: can it be used without the cover?** A: The cover is glued on, but I'm not sure why you would want to use it without the cover, that is what keeps the seeds from being scattered. And I use the cover to separate the hulls from the seeds. I tip the feeder a bit, and shake the contents. The hulls go to the top, remaining in the top. I turn it to dump them, and since the heavier seeds are in the colored base, they don't get dumped. Works slick! **Q: What are the demensions of each size? i want to slip it into open metal cup instead of supplied bracket but it would have to be snug to work.** A: I can give you the measurements of the large cup only. Keep in mind that the cup is not a straight cylinder, but is conical shaped (similar to a flower pot). Thanks! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Clucking Great” -my hens *by Y***E on January 25, 2023* TL;DR: I use this for my chicken coop. It keeps rain and droppings out of the oyster shell which saves me money due from waste. I would LOVE to have one of these made with stainless steel and a glass or UV resistant plastic top. I found the small one in a pet store and used it as a test run. Sometimes the rain will blow into the bottom of my coop from the side and it would ruin any oyster shell in a cup and make a mess. The top cover fixes that problem for me. Large is the one in the picture (beside of the rooster). If I find the small one (it broke after a couple of years and I replaced it with the large size) I will take a picture for comparison. I may spray paint the plastic with a UV resistant paint to extend the life. Sun just naturally degrades plastic and this wasn’t meant to be outdoor use. Things I like about the Large Size: + Cup is removable, just twist it a bit and lift it out of the ring. + Doesn’t have a perch + Larger capacity: I don’t have to refill it as often. Any little time saver on the farm is helpful. Negatives about the Large Size: -The ribbed washer is a bit annoying to put into place because it slips off of the little square piece. I wish there was a way to hold it better. You decide on the alignment you like the best for your cage setup I’d recommend glueing it in place. Things I like about the Small Size: +Doesn’t take up much space +Sufficient for a couple of hens Negatives about the Small Size: -Has a perch: I put a piece of wax paper on my glass top stove and melted it off -Cup doesn’t come off the ring.
