A dry calcium substance with air freshener pearls islocated on the top portion. It absorbs the moisture which is thendeposited into the lower bag. When calcium is depleted, follow thedirections for easy disposal and replace with another.My DampRid hangers last a variable amount of time, depending onthe moisture in my home. However, I know it's only working when itneeds to so there is no waste. I am almost 100% sure it causes molds and mildew to grow, though i dont know how. The thing is people will be delighted that it works because you can actually see the water in the bag but when you remove the product from your home, you will actually notice an increase in the growth of mold or mildew.
