More like a clipboard. With a lot of water it might begin to break down under the surface. Or, at best, develop a rough surface. It's a hard surface, but not a sheet of cut wood. Poss. particle board under the surface? It's smooth, as if there's some kind of finish on the surface to protect it. I think it would do fine with damp canvases that dry fast, if they don't leak drippy water for ~30 min.l **Q: Are these really almost an inch thick??** A: No. Just over 1/10 of an inch. A little bit on the flimsy side but OK. **Q: Would this board be good for use with watercolor paper?** A: Yes. This board is primarily for securing your paper to a steady surface while you work. Perfect for mobile sketching/drawing. I’ve searched for the specific artboard Type that I had in art school. But, they’re nearly impossible to locate. THAT type of heavy duty, THICK wood board is from a past era, I assume. Used ones are typically to scarred or grooved to use. (Or you would have to pay an exorbitant amount of $$.) However, this “recycled” art board is very close. Although it is thinner than I’d typically prefer, it does have some give in the middle due to it’s larger size. But, no complaints, I’m very satisfied with all of it! Some of my previous exp with “recycled” opt’s has not been good. Yet, this board is NOT like those. These clips are strong, yet not TOO strong. The rubber banding is of good, thick quality. The hand hold location is just right, etc. The price for this size was too good to pass up. I had not used this large a size before. But, it is actually perfect for how I layout my all my drawing ref materials: images, life model pictures, etc. I’m able to place so much on this board, I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before. Right now I have (2) 11”x17” acrylic paper pads, (4) anatomy pictures, & (2) 8 1/2”x11” gestural drawings. That makes this portable art desk my favorite piece of equipment in a long time.
