I applied a small amount and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then I used a rag and applied a little pressure. This cleaner took off 25 years of stains! The good part is that I didn't have to spend time and gas driving all over town to get it and a little bit goes a long way. I figure a bottle is a 10 year supply. The other cleaners don't work like this one does so buy it at the best price you can find. **Q: Does this only remove the black/grey utensil marks or does is also remove scratches in the finish?** A: It is not made to remove scratches in the stoneware. It's to remove the black or grey lines caused by the silverware only and it does remove most of them with some elbow grease. I wander though what has caused scratches that I assume are into the glazing on the stoneware? I've had Yorktowne pattern dishes for years and don't have any scratches...occasionally they chip but not scratch...just the marks from the stainless steel rubbing against the finish. This particular version of the Phaltzgraff Stoneware & Porcelain Cleaner is the previous generation (10 oz. bottle) and is no long available. I called the supplier for Amazon (HomePlumbing.com) and was told they have only a handful of old bottles left in stock. I have used this product for 15+ years. My original 10 oz. bottle lasted about 10 years. The Pfaltzgraff company suspended selling this cleaner for 2-3 years. I know because I kept calling to find out when it would be available again. Eventually they began to sell it again. However, it was reformulated and the current liquid does NOT have quite as fine a grit, so I am afraid to use it on all surfaces. The original formula could be used even on chrome without scratching! I decided to go ahead and purchase a bottle of this previous version at the high price of $75.00 because there is no other equal.
