I prefer to use a diamond cutoff disc in mine. It cuts bolts very nicely. Of course, that's just my preference. I have some pad locks to remove** A: Cutting and grinding discs are the hardest materials known, after diamond. So, yes, the discs will cut pad locks. You can use the hardest material, diamond, to make the cuts even quicker. I have even used it for things like bolts up to maybe 3/16" thick or so, but I've broken those little cut-off wheels several times. This is a much sturdier, much better choice. The cut-off disk is 3" in diameter and about 1/16" thick. I initially bought it to cut off a 5/8" thick bolt that could not be removed from existing construction. Made a quick job of that! I've also used it to slice through some copper cladding to get at the wood panel underneath, cut through spring steel while demolishing an old couch, and routine cutting down of bolts that are just too long for what I need. It has a hefty, industrial feel to it -- a reassuring feel.I put on a Lenox diamond 3" diameter cutoff disc, with a 3/8" center hole. It made a lot of noise because the Lenox disc is 0.050 " (1.2 mm) thick, and the disc mounting shaft has an 0.080" protrusion. This 0.030" difference makes the Lenox 0.50" thickness disc loose. Lenox specifies their disc only for their Lenox tools. Well, I want the diamond, anyway, on MY tool. "Diamonds (tools) are a guy's best friends".As a workaround, I put a washer, with a 3/8" hole, 0.050" diameter on the shaft. It worked great, with no play and no vibration. You may have to grind the washer to the desired thickness.Since the body diameter of this tool is 2 3/4", and the disc is 3" it's designed to use, you may have difficulty in cutting a flat piece of sheet metal, or flat other material. I suppose, you would have to SLANT the tool to the work to be able to cut it. You could consider a 4" disc tool. Four (4") inch disc are not recommended for this tool, as it would require changing to a larger diameter disc guard; AND, then, the rpm may be too high for the disc or the tool.
