Any delicate omega-3s are highly susceptible to oxidation from heat, light, and air, making proper storage (refrigerated, dark bottle) crucial and necessitating discarding it if it smells sour, fishy, or tastes bitter. I've been using this product for years and i've never had a bottle go rancid after opening and I use it everyday, but I also store it in a cool dark closet and they are in dark bottles.
