You simply loosen the velcro strap and push the button. There's no catch you have to push the collar past to mess with. To retract you simply push the button again and push the two ends together. At any rate my first couple of uses out of this thing has managed to impress me with the quality and utility of it. Time will tell if it lasts, but so far I'm quite happy with my purchase and would certainly buy it again. The guy that made the alleging they lied about the 60mph testing apparently can't read all that well. They clearly say the umbrella is tested to 60mph GUSTS which is quite different than 60mph sustained winds the guy is trying to test the umbrella for. I'm sure he thinks he's smart lashing the umbrella to his truck and filming the thing going down the road, but I was laughing hysterically by that point at how inept he was.
