I suggest that you soak it submerged for 24 hours before the first use. Turn it over several times during the 24 hour period. Each time you turn it over you will see new bubbbles of air escaping from the stone. Use the stone while WET! In subsequent uses, soak for between 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on how much 'new' air is escaping from the stone. I understand oil can be used in addition to water but I am told and have demonstrated that it is unneccessary.
