I remember using it in place of my DVD drive and changing some of the settings in the bios and/or control panel to allow the computer to recognize it. I was running a SSD drive and didn't use the selector and it worked just fine. The drive in my laptop was also a SSD. Hope it helps. The only minor issue I have is, the screws included in the kit are too small. On the underside of the case there are 4 holes in the frame to secure your ssd to the frame. The screw holes in the frame are larger than the heads of these screws.
