Both have a 2 piece design, both curve the blade a lot and both have the adjustable washer at the base of the handle. But the Parker Variant zeroes those defects that belong to the Progress and adds that extra touch to its product making it (in our opinion), decidedly superior. First of all, Parker Variant is much heavier and longer than Merkur Progress (110g versus 88g / 102mm vs. 80mm) but the weight is well distributed throughout the razor eliminating the fatigue of use thanks to the almost perfect balance. The range of aggressiveness of the Variant is wide and at minimum height this razor turns out to be just as much as more aggressive (and therefore functional) than the Merkur Progress which on the contrary is decidedly and excessively delicate and gentle when set to a minimum.
