I simply unscrewed the old one and replaced it with the new one. The original door survived 13 years and was the only passage to the litterboxes of my 5 cats! The old one was still working perfectly but the felt seal had long since worn away from weekly cleanings. However, the locks and swinging mechanism still performed perfectly. The lock options are great for holding my kitties in their litterbox room when I have company or when I have construction guys inside my home who might accidentally leave a door open. I just flip the lock to allow the cats to go inside their room, but not be able to leave it. If I flip the lock the night before, all of my felines will have made their way inside by themselves by the next morning which eliminates the drama of catching and placing them in the hold room manually.
