Review: One Star - Without av cable it's a use less Review: Works well! - Hooked it up to my bedroom PC and was able to attach the coaxial cable from our set top box, installed the software, and it just simply works! The software isn't the greatest, but it get the job done! Had also ordered a Happauge unit of the same type, but it didn't want to work with the signal from my set top box, just the coaxial cable directly from the wall, so I returned it. Also returned this TV tuner, but to no fault of it's own. My plan all along was to be able to use my bluetooth headset to watch regular TV so I don't wake up family at night. Had this for a couple of years. GREAT at first, then started losing channels, then died about 6 months ago. Very common to find the same in reviews on other sites. So the good news is, NO contract...the Bad news is, you get to buy a new one every year, that's if you are lucky. Get used to it folks, many electronic devices that used to last for 10 years, now last less than one. But to answer you specifically, it makes no difference. Ran through splitter for the year that it worked, when it quit, I tried direct, new wire, cleaned antenna connections, many hours of work wasted. Not saying some may have used bad splitters, and a temp fix may be lucky for you. For more info, check newegg with 10 times the reviews. It has a %47 total, %28 1 or 2 star and only %16 4 star. Even that is misleading because so many post the review when they first set it up and don't bother when it fails. As much as I enjoyed how well it worked at first, I refuse to pay $50 a year to keep replacing them. **Q: What type of antenna is included? Is it a clip on? Is it two antennas in a "V"? Is it a magnetic base? Is it a single pole antenna?** A: I have a telescoping antenna from a previous HDTV OTA tuner that has a heavier and magnetic base, however, it doesn't have any better/worse reception than this "V" antenna, which is so flimsy, each individual antennae isn't strong enough to stay in any fixed "up" position. Because the antenna is removable, pickup a cheap larger HDTV antenna and give it a try. **Q: Will a better antenna help in reception? Can you recommend one for indoor(non-portable) use?** A: A better antenna does improve efficiency. I've tried several different types of rabbit ears and the like but have had the best success with one of the "leaf antennas" (copy and use this link for Amazon search: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_5?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=leaf+antenna&sprefix=leaf+%2Celectronics%2C252). I use it at work and I am at the outer edge of reception and behind some hills. As one of the other answers stated with digital it is usually there or not. These leaf antennas seem to be able to pull in the weakest stations with not problems. Also, the power amplifier included with some of the versions also makes a difference. If you live with lots of clutter (trees, hills, buildings, etc) try one of the powered ones. Avermedia site has updated program/driver software on this page: (...) The installation was simple enough plug in the device and antenna and run the downloaded software the new software/driver package supports Win7 x86, Win7 x64, Win8 x86, Win8 x64, Win8.1 x86, Win8.1 x64, Win10 x86, Win10 x64. The software works well and although not super intuitive it should pose no problem with anyone with modest PC skills to navigate and set up the unit. Run the channel scan and watch TV. The supplied antenna did pick up 33 channels but not very well. There were dropouts and poor sound on every channel. I Then tried a Amazon Basics leaf antenna. It was a little better with dropouts but sound was better. I then attached an amplified RCA indoor antenna Model #: ANT1251F and all 33 channels were clear and the sound was perfect.
