The 3 inch cup should be sufficient, but some prefer the greater clearance of a 3.5 inch cup in order to build a lather on the side. I use an off brand shaving bowl with a 72mm diameter at the opening, which I believe was designed around the Van Der Hagen shaving soap. That lasted me a solid year and I decided to try something different. Luckily this one fit the cup, more or less. **Q: Is the glycerin coconut based?** A: its ingredient panel lists glycerin as a major part of the soap.
