About every 10/ to 12" along the strand of ivy there are no leaves for 3 inches. I would recommend doubling up on your strands if you need it bushy. For my project which was using the vine climbing a tree I was able to use just one strand at a time. It did have an odor but I put it outside for a day to air it and the odor has not returned.
