What you are doing is actually heating up the device with a small internal heating element, which dries out the silica dessicant inside the frame, which, when "charged" or more correctly redried, allows the silica dessicant to again absorb moisture at a higher rate. When the Dessicant has lost its blue color, it absorbes moisture at a less efficient rate. The blue is restored by flipping up the outlet tabs on the back of the unit, and plugging it into the wall to engage the heating element. This product is made for small spaces, not to dehumidify your house. In my case, I had a lot of moisture with my old, single-pane windows and, come to find out, my furnace had an automatic humidifier on it so I shut that off and now use other, less "wet" methods for humidifying only the areas in use, in the winter. So, moisture around the windows lets me know that I'm humidifying too much. **Q: I was thinking of putting these inside an air duct to prevent mold. Does the back need to have open access to air?** A: Silica gel is a granular, vitreous, porous form of silicon dioxide made synthetically from sodium silicateworks by the adsorbtion of water in the air clinging to the silica gel's surface. It can only adsorb moisture from the air it comes in contact with. You won't see these beads become swollen and soggy; they can't grab and hold that much water. I believe the weight ratio of gel to the amount of water it can hold is about 40 to 1. So 40 grams of gel could hold onto about a gram of water.
