But note that it has over 700 pages including photos. The information is pretty much timeless, so the date of publication matters little. I don't think there is a book available on rocks and minerals of such overall utility and quality. All of the Audubon guides are superb- I just ordered one on mushrooms for our oldest daughter who has an interest in mycology. I have the North American Trees book and it is similarly excellent. They are shown as "wild" uncut rocks, not cabs, so it's more useful as a field guide when you are rock hounding. About half of the book is photos and the other half is descriptive notes on color, luster, hardness, cleavage, crystals, field marks, similar species, environment, occurrence, location, and other interesting facts. The cover is "pleather" to protect the contents from water and debris.
