In the good old days VTVM's were valued for their high input impedance, but today most DVMs have high impedance inputs. Because this does not significantly load the circuit it can potentially provide more accurate results. Except when it doesn't. It is possible to have stray voltage in a circuit as a result of leakage in equipment, or capacitive or inductive coupling. Because these voltages cannot support a meaningful load or current, they are often called ghost voltages. High impedance meters will reflect these ghost voltages, but a lower impedance meter will slightly load the circuit and more accurately reflect the true working voltage of the circuit. To my knowledge Fluke makes one meeter which addresses this: The Fluke 117 with dual impedance modes. This meter lets you choose high or low impedance making it ideal for electrical work. A less expensive but serviceable option is an old fashioned "buzz box" (solenoid) tester. This device, while crude, is cheap and will allow you to determine if a dangerous voltage is present. Make sure you get the solenoid type as there are solid state lookalikes which might or might not be low impedance.. What's different from the non-original (whatever that is)?** A: Mine came with a fancy hologram with Chinese language on it. "Original" is probably supposed to mean "authentic". This is great little meter. It seems to have all the legendary Fluke performance and reliability. BUT, this model isn't supposed to be sold in the US (no internal fuse, no UL rating) so Fluke does not recognize or support it in the US. It doesn't read Amps but having Fluke 87s for 30 years I can count on one hand the number of times I've used the Amp settings on them.
