I am on my second set in 39 years because, yes, it will chip over the years and the hot water of the dishwasher (or at least the older models of dishwashers) probably helped to wear down my first set. Important to know is that Corelle WIlL BREAK - as in the one review where someone dropped a piece 3 feet on top of a pile of rocks???? Corelle does however, wear much better than ceramic dinnerware. I selected a printed Corelle pattern for my wedding and used it until the color on the edges began to chip away but that was 35 years ago. I now pair a plain white Corelle plate with the new (somewhat elegant) Bella embossed salad and dessert plates and 18 oz bowls. It looks great but will withstand and kids or adults learning to set the table without hitting the side of the counter.
