## Description

New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice - An desertcart Best Science Book Of 2014 - Scientific American Recommended Read "Fascinating, Informative, Exhilarating." -- Wall Street Journal Deep Is A Voyage From The Ocean'S Surface To Its Darkest Trenches, The Most Mysterious Places On Earth. Fascinated By The Sport Of Freediving--In Which Competitors Descend Great Depths On A Single Breath--James Nestor Embeds With A Gang Of Oceangoing Extreme Athletes And Renegade Researchers. He Finds Whales That Communicate With Other Whales Hundreds Of Miles Away, Sharks That Swim In Unerringly Straight Lines Through Pitch-Black Waters, And Other Strange Phenomena. Most Illuminating Of All, He Learns That These Abilities Are Reflected In Our Own Remarkable, And Often Hidden, Potential--Including Echolocation, Directional Sense, And The Profound Bodily Changes Humans Undergo When Underwater. Along The Way, Nestor Unlocks His Own Freediving Skills As He Communes With The Pioneers Who Are Expanding Our Definition Of What Is Possible In The Natural World, And In Ourselves. "A Journey Well Worth Taking." --David Epstein, New York Times Book Review "Nestor Pulls Us Below The Surface Into A World Far Beyond Imagining And Opens Our Eyes To These Unseen Places." -- Dallas Morning News "This Is Popular Science Writing At Its Best." -- Christian Science Monitor.

Review: Freediving training - A great training book.
Review: The Ocean has been waiting for THIS BOOK. - Having read Nestor's Breath, I came to Deep with high expectations, and still left humbled by how much further he went. The premise sounds narrow: a journalist stumbles into the world of competitive freediving and follows the thread wherever it leads. But Nestor understands, as the best science writers do, that any one door into nature opens onto everything else. Freediving becomes a lens through which he examines cetacean communication, the biomechanics of pressure, bioluminescence in the mesopelagic zone, and the ancestral reflexes buried in our own physiology. The book descends by depth, each chapter pulling you further from the surface. Structurally elegant, never gimmicky. What separates Deep from ordinary science journalism is that Nestor earns his observations. He's not interviewing scientists from a press room; he's in the water with them, frequently out of his depth in both senses. That discomfort is visible on the page, and it keeps the writing honest. The undercurrent throughout is grief, for what the ocean is losing and how little most of us have bothered to look. Nestor doesn't moralize. He just shows you enough that the conclusion arrives on its own. A rare book: scientifically serious, personally vulnerable, and impossible to put down.
