The coils definately get hot enough to shrink the tubing, but the blowing air will not carry enough heat to do anything. You need to let the coils warm for a bit on high, then get the tubing as close as you can to them. Most hair dryers have baffles that prevent objects that are flamable (hair) or conductive (the wire you're holding) to get close to the heating coils. tl;dr It's worth a shot. If it fails - a cigarette lighter will work just as well and heat guns are cheap, too. **Q: CAn it be used for 12 awg or 10 awgg electrical cable?** A: Of course, I bought this set cuz I needed a heat shrink tube that was large enough to fit over my true 4AWG of OFC power & ground wire for my 3500watt amp & the largest 13mm pieces were just large enough to fit on my 4AWG & since I ran 10AWG for my speaker wire I can absolutely assure that this set has plenty of sizes that would fit perfectly for 10 & 12AWG Sized wire. Don't reinvent the wheel. **Q: Can the tubing be cut in half lengthwise to get it over wiring which has a plug already attached, and still be heat Shrank?** A: You can do this but it will no longer be a tube.
