Actually shaped like a J. They're pretty nice for the money. I don't know about straight clips though. **Q: Will this fastening system secure 19ga. hardware cloth to a 4ga. cattle panel?** A: I am not sure of the sizes of those, however, I used these to make rabbit cages. I used the 1"x1" wire fencing with hardware cloth over it for the bottom. When closed, the opening is perhaps as big as a regular sized pencil. I used to have some that the head wasn't as big on them, it had a narrower head for the J clip. These have the larger head and make it difficult to get into the 1/4" hardware cloth without bending it to pieces. **Q: What is the distance between the bottom of the handles when completely open?** A: 7 inches **Q: Will these j clip pliers work for the 1/2" x 1/2" welded wire hardware cloth easily or will the fit be too tight?** A: It'll work. I made 2 large coops using these pliers and 1/2" x 1/2" wire. You've got to have quite a bit of patience though.
