These are middle of the road for nickel wound strings. **Q: Is this a decent guage for drop b on a bass?** A: been using EXL-170 for years with drop B and D tuning 4 string - fender P bass no buzz super clear **Q: How are the mediums compared to lights, i am looking at these for my first string change and i don't know what i have now. Is there a big difference?** A: Not really a big difference. The most common gauge is 45-65-85-105 (Custom Light). If you like a bit more stiffness in your G and D strings, go with Medium. If you like a little looser E and A, go with Light. If you don't care one way or the other, just go with Custom Light.Mind you, again, it's not a huge difference. It's subtle.
