While I haven't had a chance to try it yet, I am pretty confident that I'd be able to take wool purchased in an unprocessed format, clean it if needed, and take it from there all the way through to making yarn. There was enough information for me that I'm comfortable with the idea of making my own drop spindle when I get the chance, and trying to use that. I'm also hoping that if I like that, one day I might save up and purchase a spinning wheel. The instructions on that make me feel like I'd be able to figure my way through one without further book help. As the author says, having someone there physically with you to advise you can be helpful, but I"m pretty sure I'd figure it out without a frustration-melt-down based on the book's information.Book covered cleaning the fiber, carding, getting it ready to spin, spinning in various ways, some historical background to spinning, finishing what you've spun so it actually stays spun and lasts, a bit on dying, the concept of spinning oil (which was totally a new idea to me!), and some advice on how to handle some fibers and materials other than wool including flax, cotton, and some goat hairs.The book does explain a spinning wheel (of several types) in enough detail to know what you might be getting into buying one from an antique store--or at least if it will be one you can get to work.
