Review: Great Boots! - KEEN continues to innovate some of the best boots and shoes in the industry from its US based design center, and builds with craftsmanship, durability, eco-friendly PFAS-free materials, and ethical sourcing. Some of their products are US made, but the Targhee series is designed in the US and expertly made first in Cambodia and now in Thailand. The Targhee line is backed by KEEN’s lifetime warranty against delamination and structural failure. I’ve never had to use their warranty personally but KEEN gets consistently good reviews from many customers for their service and for standing behind their products. In determining which Targhee boots I wanted to purchase, I ordered boots from the three available Targhee series II, III, and IV in regular and wide sizes. With regard to fitment, I found the three Targhee boots to run true to size. I’m 5’9” and 180lbs. I normally wear a 10.5R, and found that size the best fit for me after also trying 10W and 10.5W. I’m also not a true W, I just like a little more room. I usually wear lighter socks than many people do (Darn Tough Micro Crew Lite). The Targhee’s already have a bit more room in the toe box than average boots, so keep that in mind if you are between W and R. They all fit me much better than the more narrow European boots like LOWA or ASOLO do. While shopping for boots this year, I tried multiple styles and sizes of these European boots and none of them worked for me at all, they were all too narrow as well as tight and stiff. I also looked at MERELL’s MOAB series, which is a close competitor of the KEEN. The MOABs are comfortable but a bit more sneaker-like, and the quality and aesthetics wasn’t quite to the KEEN standards for a comparable price. Targhee II Second generation of a tried and tested comfortable all-around, multi-use boot with a roomy toe box and reliable KEEN.DRY waterproofing and a lug outsole that grips everything from muddy trail to rock. Not a true rock boot, nor designed for heavy load carrying over rough terrain, but better suited to most general use than a firmer, heavier, dedicated mountaineering boot. A good looking boot that can be worn casually and breaks in quickly and is comfortable immediately. Often available at a discount since there are two subsequent models now available. Cloth nylon lace eyelets and a plastic lace speed-hook. 590g weight each boot. Targhee III Leaned into a sleeker profile, almost 2 oz lighter than the II, or 3 oz lighter than the IV, with a streamlined outsole and midsole. Some synthetic where the II was leather, and leather where II was synthetic. It retains the same waterproofing and all‑terrain traction, yet offers a slightly more versatile profile for both trail and everyday wear. Has the most visible leather of the series. Leather lace eyelets and a metal lace speed-hook. 540g weight each boot, so the III is by far the lightest of the three. Targhee IV Combines the best of both worlds: the II’s supportive yet roomy fit with III’s updates but built taking into account all of what KEEN learned from the prior three iterations of Targhee. The main innovation of this boot is KEEN’s new FUSION construction, which fuses upper and sole without adhesive to prevent delamination, also includes a long‑lasting LuftCell midsole and a rugged outsole designed to outlast its predecessors. The new outsole is also a slightly translucent smoke color vs. the prior opaque black, which looks nice. Three-tone uppers and a lighter olive leather liven and lighten up the appearance. Back to nylon cloth lace eyelets and a metal lace speed-hook. They also gain the weight back the III series dropped. 620 weight each boot, heaviest of the three. While all three KEENs were comfortable right out of the box, I read several reviews about customers adding higher-end KEEN insoles. Subsequently, I bought the K-30, Medium Arch, Outdoor insoles in Large and found them superior to the original insoles. I found they fit precisely after easily trimming to my size along the marked 10.5 line, and provided additional cushion, arch support, and some added lateral stability. While expensive (at a quarter the cost of the boot!!!) the insoles were noticeably better, particularly with gel in the pad and heel. So, should KEEN include them in the first place and just increase the boot price? The original insoles are not bad, just not as good as the upgrades, so it’s hard to say. I’d definitely pay $20 more for the upgrade, but $40 additional as purchased really is a bit much! Also, they weigh the same 57g as the original insoles. In summary, I found things I liked about each of the Targhee models and, while I can appreciate the evolutionary improvements, I’d be happy with any of the three Targhee boots. The Targhee II is a seriously good value since it can often be found at a discount due to newer models being out. The III is noticeably lighter and has a more muted appearance, with more visible leather. However, I ended up keeping the more expensive and heavier IV because of liking the visual style and having an appreciation for the innovations KEEN has made building on their success, and learning from the prior generations. I buy boots very infrequently, so I also didn’t want to save a few bucks and wish I’d gotten the newer model for years after. If you just burn through boots with mileage, the II series is probably where you should look, but you really can’t go wrong with any of the three if something grabs you about one of them. They are all great boots!
Review: Comfortable, Quality, Smart Design. - Five stars so far..I bought a full size up from my normal size 6 (yes, I am a really small guy) because I wanted room for thick wool socks for a hiking trip. I would have bought a 6.5 size but not available so jumped to 7's. The most hiking I do these days is across the parking lot at work and up 3 flights of stairs to my desk so the padding is a must for my soft soles. I hate buying shoes because they never have my size. My feet are very wide and I have no arches which makes finding the right fit even harder. Usually it takes several painful days for me to break in shoes. These Keen Targhees are "amazing" and I am not exaggerating. They were comfortable from the moment I put them on. I had on thin socks so I cinched the laces, they snugged up nice and tight and fit great. I put on extra thick wool socks and loosened the laces and they still fit great. Today, I wore thick Merino wool socks out in 90 degree humid Missouri weather and my feet sweated less than wearing cotton dress socks and leather loafers in the office. I am not kidding. Another thing, Usually when you get a pair of shoes and try them on, even if they feel good at first, you'll usually find a "hotspot" that seems like something wasn't sewn right and will start to rub and you think, "Well, I'll just have to put up with it until my foot toughens up in that spot. There has been none of that with these shoes. So, I've worn these every day for a week or so and here's my take so far. - Mid-weight and comfortable out the box. -The lacing system allows for a wide variety of fits in a singe shoe and is very sturdy. It incorporates a strap that goes around your heel that allows you to tighten the heel fit so your shoe doesn't rub up and down on your heel when walking. Nice touch. -While water proof, these shoes are breathable and my feet have stayed nearly dry. -The inner-sole is removeable and washable and adds great padding. -The arch support is just right. Some shoes go way over the top with it which can actually put too much pressure on your arch and wind up hurting. These are a sensible mid-range that should work well with many foot arch types. -The fully covered rubber toe cap is legit. It is flexible but seems substantial enough to protect the front end from wear and tear and should extend the life of the shoe. It is NOT steel toe and you are not going to scale any vertical rock faces wearing these. -I don't care about brand names or if my gear matches and even less about fashion but have to say these have a bit of style to them. I've been wearing them with dress slack to work to break them in and have actually gotten a couple compliments. -The soles are flexible but don't seem so thin that you'll feel every little rock you step on. -The fabric loops for the laces are reflective so I would not recommend these for ninjas. Obiviously these are first impressions. I can't say these are the best shoes ever (yet) because I havent put them to the test. That's next week in Colorado if we can find a trail that hasn't gotten blown out by streams flooded by snow melt. But, so far, these shoes have proven to be quality and my admiration for comfortability and attention to design has grown immensely. Update 07/15/2015: The boots were great. They grip well on rocks and uneven terrain. My feet did not blister! :) I wore extra thick merino wool sock wich helped but I attribute it to design as well. My brother had a pair of Vasque boots which have a narrower toe configuration and his toes blistered fairly quick. I'm really happy with this purchase and highly recommend these boots.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: anyone feel grip is solid on wet rocks/leaves, going downward on hill, e.g.**
A: I had a spectacular fall when stepping on wet leaves on a flat rock. I had been walking slowly on a flat trail and was totally shocked from falling at all! I learned later that as wonderful as these boots have been to me, their one flaw is their lack of grippiness on wet surfaces. 99% of the time of wearing them has been totally problem free. I wish Keen would develop alternative models that had grippier soles.

**Q: Are these boots ideal for a 3-4 day backpacking trip?**
A: These boots should work well for a 3-4 day backpacking trip. Only thing I could add is these boots come to mid ankle, so they provide ankle support, but not major ankle support. If you are carrying a heavy pack and are going where there is a lot of fist sized rocks on the trail, you might want more ankle support. That statement is a reflection of the trail, not the boot. I have been wearing these boots for years, every day for two weeks at a time, on 10-20 miles hiking trips in southern CO. Never had a problem.

**Q: The Keen website says these run a half size small and recommends ordering a half size larger. Is this true?**
A: This is my second pair of Keens. I also have a pair of SOLR sandals. Love them both. I wear a size 11 1/2 in all my sneakers and cowboy boots. In a Keen I wear a size 13. In both my SOLR sandals and these Targhee II hiking boots I originally ordered a size 12. Had to send them both back and get a size 13. And I can compare them sole-to-sole with any of my size 11 1/2 sneakers and they are the same length.

**Q: Are these authentic keen brand boots?**
A: If you buy them from Davidson Shoes Inc., I can assure you they are 100 % authentic Keen boots.
We buy direct from Keen. Our retail store has been in business in the same location for over 125 years.
We cannot speak for any other amazon sellers.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My favourite boot
*by E***Y on March 29, 2026*

A really good hiking/ walking shoe. These are the only shoes/boots that I have been wearing for the past 10 years. They are wide boots and lace up as tight as you want, to offer comfortable feet all day long whether it be hiking, riding your atv, or doing yard chores. They toe cap is super valuable as it protects you from accidental bumps and scrapes. Just a great functional boot for this 65 year old guy.
