The latch is easy to open and close, not much work needed and you don’t have to drill your wall because the rubber keeps it sturdy. The space between the poles are 5cm and the whole width is 81cm and the height is 92cm the doors width is 43cm it’s not that wide but you have space to go through it so it’s okay. He also can squeeze between the widest part of the gate( I think it's 2.5 inches?) so I put insulation for pipes on the slats and duct taped it there and he hasn't tried it so far. I think it Made it thick enough so he can't fit through. He is a very petite cat with a small head. **Q: Could a kitten squeze through the bars?** A: We have three cats, all adults but one of them is a rather small calico. None of the three adult cats can squeeze through the bars, but the calico learned to jump the gate after about 3 weeks. Once she figured it out, she can do it easily now. For adult cats, the squeeze-through point would be sides of the gate. The main section, the extensions, and the junction between the extension and the main are all of uniform size, so if a cat can't squeeze through the main section, they also won't get through the extensions. That said, the one opportunity for bypass on the sides is if the opening happens to be *almost* wide enough to need an extension (or an additional extension) but not quite wide enough to fit it in, this leaves a gap between the upper and lower threaded pressure pad, between the outermost bar and the vertical edge of the opening. That opening may be wider than the gap between bars. Here, I worked around this problem by putting a 2x2 inch (nominal, actual size 1.5 x 1.5 inches) board between the gate and the door frame. The pressure of the gate is sufficient to hold the board in place, so I didn't need to nail or screw it to the door frame. Longer term, I am planning to use a bandsaw to slightly narrow an extra extension. The manufacturer probably doesn't officially sanction that, but I'm okay with voiding the warranty on the inexpensive extension. "Do this at your own risk." I'm about to post a review of these gates. We're quite happy with the quality; my answer to this question is intended neutrally to share some hints about how they work for small, agile adult cats. :) **Q: can a cat fit through the slots?** A: My cat( 9-10 lbs) can fit through the widest part next to where the gate opens. I think it's 2.5 inches. But I put pipe insulation duct taped over that slat and I think it made it thick enough that we can't fit through anymore. **Q: I have a door wide gap between 36-37 inches.
