I do a lot of power walking and wanted a shorter boot that was warm, waterproof and offered excellent support -- this boot offers all those things. I tried many different brands, including Sorels which are very attractive but mostly lack ankle support. These were by far the most comfortable and best looking of the other brands I tried. I've never worn Salomon brand before, but my normal boot/athletic shoe size fits perfectly. They have a medium wide toe box and I can wear a medium cushy wool sock with them. The collar around the ankle fits me very well and does not feel like it's rubbing or annoying the back of my ankle at all. These will not keep you from slipping and falling on sheer ice -- you'd need studs for that -- but they offer excellent gripping and my feet feel very secure and snug in them without having the clunky, inflexible feel of some other winter boots.
