That's what we did and the size up was perfect. I could technically fit into the size suggested for his age, but the leg holes squeezed him a bit harshly; so we went a size up as recommended.In the pool, this seemed to work great. It did soak up a bit of pool water, but not so much that it was dripping out. The snaps make it easy to remove. I suggest removing after they are out of the pool because it is wet. It washes easily as well, air dry with the other swim stuff.
