One of my favorite things about this artist is that he likes to play with your interpretation, likes to leave the audience to opt for their experience with double or even triple meanings The production-master level artistry and able to expertly pull from so many genres, artists and eras of music The instrumentalists-I'd go to individual concerts for the drummer, guitarist, bassist The experimentation/signature Zayn-the use of vocal chops or whatever it's called when they use his voice for more than just singing for example The mixing-the sentimental throwbacks mixed with the modern (and this is from someone not into the slurred word trend of singing. He does it tho but I've made peace with it on this work) I recommend listening with headphones to get the intricacies of the stellar production and to pick up on his background vocals and harmonies because some of the instruments do tend to lead your ears. But then again it does add to the experience that on each new listen there is more to find. I'm impressed as usual that he makes music from this kaleidoscope of sound. He pulls things together that shouldn't work but it does. Where he takes uneven tempos, real lyrics or blunt ones, comes on and off the beat effortlessly, purposely leaves in off notes and flows as natural as an ocean wave- both predictable in that there is an inevitable rhythm yet each one an unpredictably different, chaotic beautiful energy. The middle of the album is probably the weakest for me, but in an album of riches there has to be gems among the gold. So its not that the earworm tracks are bad, they are quite entertaining, it's just compared to the other gem quality tracks they felt more commercial. Windowsill being a good example of this-I've chosen it the most from the album to add to my fav playlists, BUT if asked for my favorite song on the album it would never be it. In short, this short album is well worth the experience. I enjoyed his work with One Direction, and have purchased all his solo work. I have just gotten around to listening to this. Hard to wrap my head around it initially. It is not very commercial, and the use of really foul language seems gratuitous, but on replay in the car, it just gives you ultimately a very comfortable vibe. His voice is so terrific.
