The latch side is separated a bit, because this is what helps keep tension on the wall to keep the gate in place. there is a band holding it somewhat together, I would not cut it until the gate is installed. If the band has slipped, or gets removed before installation, it is not a big deal. having the band there may help in a narrower doorway, it might make it a bit easier to go in, and you are also not fighting with the gate wanting to swing on you while you get the adjustments tightened up. I did not use the sticky pads, or screws to install the gates, and they are for the most part staying put. The kitchen one is a painted doorway, that gets a bit sticky in humid weather, so the gate is just kind of stuck there, and does not move. The steps one is a varnished doorway, and slides a bit, but that seems to happen more when the kids try to hang on it. Not sure the PSI of tension the gate places on the wall to stay in place, but I can put it back in place if I forget it is there and trip over it and knock it out, without loosening things back up. If the ate is going between posts and not a doorway, make sure the post are sturdy though. In my opinion, if the tension from the gate moves your posts, the posts need fixed, that is not something I would want my kids climbing or leaning on. I am a mechanical engineer who is also a metal fabricator, who owns a TIG welder, lathe and many other metal-working tools. I have looked at and used cheap, non-swinging, wooden gates in the past. The past is over. This is the future. I was curious as to how a gate that has a swinging panel could be properly held in place - without permanently mounting it to a doorway (read "holes" and "screws" - must be needed, right?) Well, this product is designed such that the "U" shaped frame is intentionally bowed outwards at the top. This means that when you adjust the srews that postion the rubbery cups that go against the door frame outwards, they force the bowed frame back into vertical alignment, thereby exerting considerable force agains the door frame - and holding the gate firmly in place. The product is a strong, welded steel product that has been powder coated. It is beautifully made. In addition, the main latch (at the top - an auxiliary bottom latch is included) is designed so that it takes a special grip to open the gate. Having a sharpie granddaughter spending a lot of time visiting, we kept our hands concealed when we activated the latch. Alas, now that she is over three years old, she has figured out what we were doing. Of course, now she is old enough to understand why we still use the gates - for safety - and she only opens the gates when an adult is with her. A "terrible 2-year-old" will be foiled by this latching system. And, it's a one-hand operation and can be closed and latched just by pushing it closed. Easy to do with a babe in arms. I cannot recommend this product more highly.
