The nylon or polyester usually accounts for about 0.2mm so the rest is all about the amount of rubber you have. 1-2mm is usually fine for most home sewing machines to work with. 3mm (approximately 1/8 inch) will depend on the machine, and anything 4mm and above is recommended only for industrial sewing machines.
