On my Treeworks Chimes (the 5 tube set), I tried a variety of materials in place of this mallet. Not good. I even tried a set of drum sticks which produced unsatisfactory sounds. My best advice is "don't try to reinvent the wheel" here and just purchase this replacement mallet if needed or you just want an extra one.
