I had no issues with both 3.5" SATA drives and 2.5" SSD, although a 2.5 to 3.5 tray converter was needed (ordered separately) for a few extra bucks (as expected). Thunderbolt connectivity works flawlessly. I used Mac's Disk Utility to set up RAID-1 for the SATA drives and it works well. I use rsync via cron to backup the SSD to SATA instead, which also works flawlessly. My mac never has had any connectivity issues with this unit, after a few months of daily use. Recommended. This raid is setup independently in each bay. As soon you click on ejecting that specific drive/bay, you should be fine by just popping it out. Unless you format the all 5 drive/bay and set them up internally as one all array, then you can't eject one drive. **Q: How easy is it to swap out a drive? Are the drives attached to the trays with screws? Also, how loud is the fan?** A: Very easy to swap the drives. Literally, push a button and pull it out. The drives are attached to the trays with screws, so if you want them to be truly quick swappable, you'd buy additional trays from Oyen that you can leave on the other drives you're swapping in. Fan is not noisy at all. **Q: Does this work with an 8tb hard drive?** A: Their web site says it can hold 40TB which is 5 8TB drives. I have not put in an 8TB to test. **Q: Can the raid be expanded if adding drives without first destroying it? For example adding a 4th drive to a raid5 3 drive set to get more capacity.** A: It does not have RAID. Any drives appear as separate drives to the OS. You can add RAID software to the computer. For a couple of the devices there was a problem with the fan and how hot the disks got. Tech support was very responsive and sent me a higher volume fan.
