I am very active and excise every day with both walking and exercise bike. Also do strength training. I use the back brace only when I have a flare up of pain. Suspect that frequent use of the back brace would tend to weaken you stomach muscles because the brace lessens the sole dependence on these muscles. Just my opinion and hope it helps you. **Q: is this good for lifting? i'm a woman and am short. i have a job that requires me to lift heavy objects all day.** A: I use this belt to give me protective support when doing lifting. I have a bad back and it does help with preventing doing damage to my spine. My doctor says that this belt is great for protecting my back but to not depend on it to give me power to lift items heaver than I am supposed to lift. So, this belt will give you protective support but should not be used to give extra strength. **Q: One reviewer states you cannot bend over. Another states they use it on the job lifting etc. Who is correct?** A: The one that complains about not bending over is the one that has the worst back. It works better when you are up moving around doing something. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best brace I've found for driving *by on Reviewed in the United States May 25, 2011* As someone who suffers from sciatica problems, I've been looking for a decent back brace to help alleviate the pain, especially when driving. I tried several, and this one with the lumbar support really does the trick.I tried a couple of other brands, but Mueller overall produces a great product for a reasonable price. Construction is excellent - seams are tight, ample velcro, easy to put on and take off. I have a 34" waist and this fits fine -- could easily accomodate several more inches.I started with the basic Mueller brace (the one without the lumbar). Nice, but didn't really help all that much in terms of pain. The higher end Mueller (the one with the laces on the back) was also very nicely made and a snap to adjust, but again, it didn't offer the support I needed. The lumbar pad on this model makes all the difference. They have videos of several of their models on their website which are very helpful, but they are hard to find -- I just stumbled across them by plugging in the model numbers. Good info, but a very poorly organized site.Everyone's back is different, so unfortunately you'll need to try out various models to see what hits the sweet spot for your condition. All three Muller braces that I've tried were all very well made and a good value, so I can highly recommend the brand.I ended up buying two so I could keep one in the car and one at home. I found that using both lumbar supports next to one another makes the support even better. The lumbar pads attach with velcro, and there is room to fit both on the same belt side-by-side. That works best for me when driving. A single lumbar pad works well for when I'm mobile.I also want to pass along some advice I received from my physical therapist regarding braces. While they can be huge help, you should not wear one constantly since it can lead to muscle atrophy. The ideal situation is to build up your core muscles so they do the job on their own. A brace is just a stop-gap to help cut down on pain on the bad days or when you are stressing the muscles (which, for me, occurs when I'm driving long distances). Used judiciously they're great; used improperly can make the situation worse.If you're reading this you probably have back pain, and I very much hope you find the right solution that helps make the situation better or at least more tolerable. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worked Great for House Moving *by on Reviewed in the United States July 30, 2012* I'm at that age where the body is willing but just not able to do everything that I want it to do. It's that age where you swear that you're not that old but your body picks inopportune times to remind you that you're not a kid anymore. This back brace has done a great job of helping me prolong the fantasy!With years of progressively worse back problems, I've recently had bouts with being unable to move without significant pain. It doesn't happen often, but when it does I can be out of commission for several days while popping prescriptions. After helping move my in-laws out of a condo recently, I had one of those bouts after months of no issues. So, when facing my own move, I decided to take a friend's advice to get a back brace and chose the Mueller based on reviews.I can't say for sure that it is really effective, but I can offer my observations to those considering it to help provide a little "aging" support:- I lifted, twisted, and carried (down flights of stairs and into vehicles) all manner of boxes and furniture without any major adverse effect.- I felt times when my back would have tweaked itself in a way that I've identified as bad for me only to feel the brace stabilize the motion and prevent pain.- I would wear the brace for hours, multiple days a week, for several weeks. It was comfortable enough to do that (though I never forgot that it was there).I fully believe, based on recent history, that I should have been popping pills to get me through the move. So, I credit this brace with giving me the stability that I needed to be an active participant in the move. But, I also used it as a reminder that while I may be strong enough to do a lot, I needed to temper my enthusiasm to do so. I accepted more help to lift heavy things, thought about how to best carry items before lifting them, took more breaks, and stopped when I felt my body fatiguing. I had many days where my body was physically exhausted and I could feel weakness in my back, but I never experienced significant pain beyond standard muscle soreness. I was so sold on it that when I left it behind in the middle of traveling back and forth for my move, I immediately ordered another one.This brace is really wide and the lumbar support really put pressure on my spine, but I never felt that it was uncomfortable. I wouldn't sit for a long time with it (I tried to drive and it just wouldn't let me slouch in a comfortable position...maybe that says something about my driving posture) so I wouldn't recommend it for folks who need a brace for more mundane activities. I also haven't worn it for sporting activities yet, but plan to do so. As others have mentioned, you will sweat under this brace and it will probably feel like a lot more than it should. That fact will make it difficult to take off for a few minutes and then put it back on.
